St Marys Loch

Dave Smith continued his epic season of seemingly doing an event every weekend with St Marys Loch.

A cheery announcement at race briefing for the standard distance triathlon on Sunday in the exceptionally picturesque setting of St. Mary’s Loch in the Scottish Borders “it’s a balmy 12-degrees in the loch” – balmy was right as 200 triathletes took to the water to swim two laps of a triangular course before peeling off wet suits and heading out on the bike.

With a strong tail wind along the undulating A708 towards Moffat reaching the mid-point turn in the road in just 30-minutes having reached speeds in excess of 40mph. The return leg took an additional 15-mins climbing that same fast down hill at just 10mph.

Transition to socks and trainer ready for the 10km run but not ready for the first of many stiles and rocky narrow tracks as the run followed the Southern Uplands Way along the edge of St Mary’s Loch.

Water was offered at the 5km turn before retracing our steps to the finish on the banks of the loch some 2hr 37 minutes later.
