Amidst very blustery conditions the Peebles Come and Try kicked off with an ominous – and torrential – downpour just as the first heat started in the pool.

Cat MacLean was the lone Edinburgh#3 member taking part in her second ever triathlon. It was a long wait for heat 3! Despite a bit of a melee at the start of the swim section with some wildly varying swim abilities necessitating a lot of firm tapping on toes, she managed to knock 37 seconds off her 400m PB, exiting second out of the pool in 6.10.

The bike section was gently undulating rather than hilly: the biggest challenge was the wind which by this time was gusting quite alarmingly. By this stage the race leader, with Tri bars (yes, Tri bars!) was some way out in front and the next few cyclists were grouped fairly closely together. Despite dropping down a couple of places towards the end of the cycle, Cat headed into T2 hot on the heels of the second and third placed competitors.

A great swim and a good cycle was followed by a truly awful run which seemed never-ending with 2 more male competitors passing her before the finish line came into view. Fortunately despite the run, the swim and cycle had kept her sufficiently far ahead of the women’s field that she held on to win 1st Female in a time of 44.16, coming 6th overall, 7 mins behind the Men’s winner .”
