A welcoming club on the North West of Edinburgh

Galashiels Tri 2015

First race of the season for me and you know you are going to get a good workout with the hilly bike course and off road run at Gala.  The glorious weather we had had all week was also disappearing.

Everything looked a lot better after sign up though when realising Iain Mackay had put in his 400m time for the swim instead of his 750m time and was ranked 3rd in the start list. All E#3 members present were very concerned for him and no one laughed!

For me a good swim lane with everyone at the same pace so it was just a matter of draft away and keep going.  No big drama.

After a good T1 exit I went to put my foot into my tri shoe on the bike and the whole strap came undone.  This meant stopping after 50m, pulling it off the pedal and putting it on again.  More faffing to then do the same with the other foot as it was now hitting the floor with the elastic bands having come off and then get going again.

With the hills at the start of the course and probably went harder than I should of done to get time back.  As I lifted my heel to get my shoes off at the end of the bike I got cramp in my calf.  This meant I went for an ungainly dismount still in my shoes.  I was later asked by my kids why I had done such a bad dismount!  I guess that’s why we do B Races.  Transition practice will take place before my next race.

The run felt OK even if I even if I somehow missed a sign and went the wrong way at a fork in the woods.

All in all a good first race with a time of 1hr 11mins and room for improvement.

It was  good to see so many others from E#3 taking part and all went well with Calum getting an impressive 1hr 6mins.
