Edinburgh#3 Team Relay 2015

The first Youth Triathlon relay in Scotland is now over and it was a great event for all that took part.

Not the kindest May weather for the first kids team triathlon in the country but everyone arrived with smiles on their faces nonetheless. The course was out, signs in place, transitions set up and the youngest age group were off.

These young athletes raced brilliantly – slick transitions, fast cycles round the course and excellent running. The 11-13 age group followed shortly after the 8-10s and both age groups were soon intermingled. All competitors rapidly got the hang of the team format, hovering expectantly in the tag zone ready to be tagged and running to the pool to start their races. It was great to see the children support each other and cheer on their team mates.

The older age groups were up next and the pace seemed to increase accordingly. Some superb swims, fast transitions, skilful bike rides and speedy runs meant no-one waited too long in the tag zone before their turn was up.

Once again there was great team spirit from all athletes, from first timers to old handers, and all age groups put in a fabulous effort.

Of course no triathlon would be complete without a few mishaps and the team tri had its share: a few bumps and scrapes getting on and off the bike, a couple of slips running on the wet grass and a broken bike with gutsy competitor running the remaining bike course on foot. In addition 3 brave athletes stood in for absent team members and ran the race course twice.

All in all we were delighted with the event and relieved at how smoothly it all ran. We were thrilled that so many teams from around Scotland entered and grateful for everybody’s enthusiasm and good cheer on the day. And of course we are incredibly grateful to all the helpers and marshals who gave up their time to ensure the whole race ran slickly and safely.
